Best time to visit

March to May (harvest season and autumn colour). Spring (September–November) for wildflowers and cool weather. Winter for cosy cellar-door fires and uncrowded tastings.

The Yarra Valley is Victoria's most accessible premium wine region, just 50 kilometres from Melbourne's CBD. Nestled in the foothills of the Yarra Ranges, the valley is famed for its elegant pinot noir and chardonnay, stunning rolling green hills, and a vibrant food and tourism scene anchored by world-class cellar doors.

Why Yarra Valley makes a perfect Melbourne weekend getaway

The Yarra Valley produces some of Australia's most sought-after cool-climate wines. Over 80 wineries operate in the region, ranging from large estates like Domaine Chandon (owned by Moët & Chandon) and Yering Station to small boutique producers crafting tiny quantities of exceptional single-vineyard wines. The region is particularly celebrated for its pinot noir, sparkling wine, and chardonnay.

Beyond wine, the Yarra Valley offers excellent food experiences. The Yarra Valley Dairy at Coldstream is one of Australia's finest artisan cheese producers, and the Healesville Farmers' Market (held monthly) is a highlight for food lovers. Healesville itself is a charming country town with excellent restaurants and the celebrated Healesville Hotel.

The Yarra Ranges National Park, which begins at Healesville's doorstep, is home to towering mountain ash forests — among the tallest flowering plants on Earth — along with wombats, lyrebirds, and platypuses in the Upper Yarra River. The Maroondah Reservoir Park at Healesville is a beautiful picnic spot. Further into the ranges, Marysville and Cumberland Falls are accessible on a longer day trip.

Top things to do in Yarra Valley

Domaine Chandon

The Australian home of Moët & Chandon, producing some of the country's finest méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines. The cellar door tours, tasting flights, and hilltop views over the valley are superb.

Healesville Sanctuary

One of Australia's best native wildlife parks, where you can encounter wombats, Tasmanian devils, owls, wedge-tailed eagles, and platypuses up close. The daily wildlife shows are excellent for families.

TarraWarra Estate

The valley's most architecturally stunning winery, with an award-winning art gallery and exceptional pinot noir. The estate restaurant is widely regarded as one of the best winery dining experiences in Victoria.

Yarra Valley Dairy

Artisan cheese made on-site from the milk of local Jersey cows. The tasting room offers generous platters paired with local preserves — easily the best cheese stop in the valley.

Yering Station

Victoria's oldest winery (established 1838), with a beautiful restaurant overlooking the vineyard and one of the best picnic lawns in the valley. The Yering Farm wine bar is a more casual but equally excellent option.

Warburton & the Rainforest Gallery

A 40-minute drive into the Yarra Ranges from Healesville, the Rainforest Gallery boardwalk at Lake Mountain area passes through ancient myrtle beech forest. The town of Warburton has excellent cafés and the Upper Yarra River for swimming.

Practical tips for your Yarra Valley trip

  • Visit the smaller boutique producers for the most memorable experiences — try Coldstream Hills, Oakridge, or Punt Road for exceptional small-batch wines.
  • The Yarra Valley is popular on summer and autumn weekends. Arrive early at popular cellar doors or book tastings in advance.
  • The bakery at Innocent Bystander winery in Healesville is excellent for a mid-morning break between cellar doors.
