About the Planner

What is Wander Melbournians?

Wander Melbournians is a free AI-powered weekend escape planner built for people living in Melbourne. It generates personalised 2-day itineraries for 30+ Victorian destinations in seconds — complete with real activities, cafés, walks, accommodation suggestions, a live weekend weather forecast, and local events happening near your destination.

Is it really free?

Yes, completely free. No account, no sign-up, no credit card required. Just choose your preferences and get a full weekend itinerary instantly. Some accommodation booking links are affiliate links — if you book through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That's how we keep the lights on.

How does the AI itinerary generator work?

You select your destination (or let us pick for you), how far you'd like to drive from Melbourne, your travel companions, budget, trip style, and interests. We send those preferences to Claude AI, which generates a personalised 2-day weekend itinerary. The AI is instructed to recommend only real, verified places — real café names, real hiking tracks, real experiences — not generic suggestions.

Do I need to create an account?

No account is needed to generate itineraries. Your recent itineraries are saved locally in your browser so you can revisit them. Share links allow you to send your itinerary to friends or across devices — they stay active for 7 days.

How accurate are the AI-generated itineraries?

The AI generates itineraries based on real Victorian destinations and is instructed to recommend genuine, specific places. However, as with any AI tool, always verify opening hours, prices, and bookings before you travel. Businesses change, tracks close, and conditions vary — treat the itinerary as an expertly curated starting point, not a live booking system.

Destinations

What are the best weekend getaways from Melbourne?

Victoria offers extraordinary variety within a few hours of Melbourne. The Great Ocean Road (2.5 hrs) is iconic for coastal scenery and the Twelve Apostles. Daylesford (1.5 hrs) is Australia's spa capital. The Grampians (3 hrs) has dramatic sandstone peaks and world-class hiking. Mornington Peninsula (1 hr) combines wineries, ocean beaches and natural hot springs. Wilsons Promontory (3 hrs) is Victoria's finest wilderness national park. Use our planner to get a personalised itinerary for any of these destinations.

What are the best hidden gem destinations near Melbourne?

Victoria has dozens of remarkable places most Melbournians have never discovered. Walhalla is a perfectly preserved gold rush ghost town in a remote Gippsland valley. Buchan Caves features ancient limestone caves with extraordinary stalactites. Maldon is Australia's first Notable Town — one of the country's best-preserved goldfields settlements. Trentham has a stunning waterfall, cool-climate food scene, and a genuinely unhurried pace. Explore all 17 hidden gems on our Hidden Victoria page.

How far are the destinations from Melbourne?

Our destinations span five distance bands: under 1 hour (You Yangs, Werribee Gorge), under 2 hours (Daylesford, Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley, Macedon Ranges), 2–3 hours (Great Ocean Road, Wilsons Prom, Phillip Island, Grampians), 3–4 hours (Bright, Beechworth, Metung, Port Fairy), and 4+ hours (Cape Conran, Croajingolong, Omeo). Use the distance filter to find getaways that suit your available travel time.

Which destinations are best in winter?

Winter (June–August) is ideal for Mount Buller and Lake Mountain (skiing and snowshoeing), Bright (cosy alpine village with fireplaces and excellent restaurants), Daylesford (mineral spas are best in cool weather), and the Grampians (wildflowers start in August, fewer crowds). Many coastal destinations like the Great Ocean Road are also dramatic and uncrowded in winter.

Which destinations are best for summer?

Summer (December–February) is perfect for coastal destinations: Inverloch, Aireys Inlet, Cape Conran, and Metung for beaches and water activities. Mornington Peninsula is excellent for wineries and ocean beaches. For summer hiking, start early at Wilsons Promontory or the Grampians to beat the heat. Note that popular summer destinations book out months in advance — plan early.

Trip Types & Companions

What companion types are available?

The planner supports six companion types, each of which adjusts the AI's recommendations: Solo (independent cafés, hiking, self-discovery), Romantic (intimate dining, spa stays, scenic drives), Family (kid-friendly activities, wildlife encounters, easy walks), Friends (group dining, adventure activities, local nightlife), Pets (off-lead beaches, pet-friendly accommodation, dog-friendly trails), and Caravan (powered sites, caravan-friendly roads, dump points, BIG4 parks).

Are there caravan-friendly destinations near Melbourne?

Yes — Victoria is outstanding caravan country. Top caravan destinations include Gippsland Lakes (flat, scenic, excellent powered sites at Lakes Entrance), Mornington Peninsula (multiple BIG4 parks near beaches and wineries), the Great Ocean Road (caravan parks at Anglesea, Lorne and Apollo Bay), and Phillip Island. Select the Caravan companion type to get an itinerary tailored for caravan-friendly roads, avoiding narrow mountain passes and unsealed tracks.

Which destinations are best for families with young children?

Phillip Island is Victoria's most popular family destination — Little Penguin Parade, Koala Conservation Centre, Nobbies, and excellent beaches. Yarra Valley has Healesville Sanctuary wildlife encounters, chocolate farms, and strawberry picking. Metung and Gippsland Lakes offer calm water swimming and boat hire. Macedon Ranges has Hanging Rock, Trentham Falls, and excellent family picnic spots. Select the Family companion type for tailored family-friendly recommendations.

Can I plan a day trip instead of an overnight stay?

Yes — select "Day trip" in the trip duration option to get a single-day itinerary rather than a full 2-day weekend plan. Day trips are great for closer destinations like You Yangs, Werribee Gorge, Daylesford, Macedon Ranges, and the Yarra Valley.

🏨

Booking & Logistics

How do the accommodation links work?

After generating your itinerary, you'll see direct links to Hotels.com and Booking.com pre-filtered for your destination and travel dates. These are affiliate links — if you book through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. For caravan trips, we also show links to WikiCamps and Hipcamp for finding caravan parks and camping spots.

Are there public transport options from Melbourne?

Yes — for destinations with V/Line train or coach services, we show a direct link to the PTV Journey Planner pre-filled with your destination. V/Line trains serve destinations including Daylesford (via Ballarat), Bright (via Wangaratta), Beechworth (via Wangaratta), and Castlemaine. Many destinations are more easily reached by car, but the planner notes public transport where it's a viable option.

Can I rent a car through the site?

Yes — the itinerary result page includes links to Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis car rental for your destination. These open pre-filled searches at the destination location. Car rental is particularly useful for visitors to Melbourne who want to explore regional Victoria.
