Best time to visit

Autumn and spring for mild weather and empty beaches. Summer is beautiful but busy. Winter visits offer dramatic surf and moody lighthouse atmospherics with almost no other tourists.

Aireys Inlet is the Great Ocean Road village that locals keep to themselves — a small, unhurried community built around the iconic Split Point Lighthouse, with excellent beaches, hidden rock pools, and a fraction of the crowds that descend on Lorne just 10 minutes east. It has its own strong identity, excellent café, and access to some of the best surf breaks on the Surf Coast.

Why Aireys Inlet makes a perfect Melbourne weekend getaway

The Split Point Lighthouse has guarded this stretch of coast since 1891, perched on dramatic white cliffs above the sea. Free guided tours run on weekends and school holidays, and the views from the clifftop are some of the most spectacular on the entire Great Ocean Road. The lighthouse became famous to a generation of Australians as the setting for the TV series "Round the Twist" in the 1990s.

Aireys Inlet beach is a long arc of ocean surf backed by coastal heath, with the Painkalac Creek estuary at its eastern end providing a calm swimming spot for families and children. The rock pools along the inlet shoreline are exceptional at low tide — one of the most productive rock pooling spots on the Surf Coast, rarely visited by tourists who stick to the main beach.

The township has a genuine community feel — the Aireys Inlet General Store, the RACV Cobram Resort, and the Saturday morning community market give it a village quality that has been eroded from larger Surf Coast towns. The walking track north from the inlet to Fairhaven (4km one way) follows the clifftops with extraordinary views.

Top things to do in Aireys Inlet

Split Point Lighthouse

A beautiful 1891 lighthouse perched on dramatic white cliffs above the ocean. Free guided tours on weekends and school holidays — the views from the clifftop are among the most spectacular on the Great Ocean Road. Famous as the setting for the TV series "Round the Twist".

Inlet Rock Pools

Some of the best rock pooling on the Surf Coast, along the rocky Painkalac Creek estuary at low tide. Octopus, sea anemones, crabs and small fish are common. Rarely visited by tourists who miss the inlet path from the main beach.

Cliff Walk to Fairhaven

A beautiful 4km clifftop walk north from Aireys Inlet to Fairhaven, with sweeping views across the Southern Ocean. The track passes the surf breaks at Painkalac beach and several dramatic headlands.

Painkalac Valley Trail

A gentle walk inland from the creek through a beautiful pocket of coastal woodland and wetland — excellent birdwatching, including white-faced herons, oystercatchers and sea eagles hunting the estuary.

Aireys Inlet Surf

A consistent beach break with several different peaks. More sheltered than the open Torquay beaches in a northerly wind. Surf hire and lessons available at nearby Torquay (20 minutes) for beginners.

Practical tips for your Aireys Inlet trip

  • Park at the lighthouse carpark (free) and walk down to the beach and rock pools — everything is accessible on foot from there.
  • The rock pools are best 1–2 hours either side of low tide on a calm day — check the Bureau of Meteorology app for tide times.
  • The café at the Aireys Inlet General Store opens early — grab coffee and pastries before the lighthouse tour.
  • Stay at one of the self-contained holiday houses rather than Lorne hotels — you get a quieter experience and the same beach access at lower cost.
