June–August for snow activities (check snow reports at lakemountainresort.com.au). September–November for spring wildflower walks on the alpine meadows. Summer weekends are crowded — visit on weekdays.
Lake Mountain is Victoria's closest alpine resort — a plateau above the Yarra Ranges snowfields, just two hours from Melbourne, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter and spectacular wildflower meadow walks in summer. Unlike the downhill ski resorts at Mount Buller and Falls Creek, Lake Mountain is focused on gentle cross-country trails that are accessible to families and beginners.
Why Lake Mountain makes a perfect Melbourne weekend getaway
The Lake Mountain plateau sits at around 1400 metres in the Yarra Ranges, receiving reliable snowfall from June to August most years. The resort operates 37km of groomed cross-country ski trails and snowshoe routes through the snowgum woodland, with beginners and families particularly well catered for. Unlike the steep terrain of the downhill resorts, Lake Mountain's gentle trails can be managed by children and first-timers within a few hours of arrival.
In summer and early spring (September–November), the alpine meadows on the plateau erupt with wildflowers — mountain daisies, trigger plants, billy buttons and alpine everlastings carpet the open slopes in a display that is among the best in Victoria outside the main alpine parks. The summer walking trails cover the same routes as the winter ski trails, making the contrast between seasons remarkable.
The resort infrastructure is simple — a day visitor centre with equipment hire, a café, and toilets — which keeps the atmosphere low-key and family-friendly. The drive up the Maroondah Highway and then the winding Marysville-Lake Mountain Road passes through beautiful wet forest and is worth taking slowly. Marysville (30 minutes below) is an excellent base with good accommodation and cafés, still rebuilding after the devastating 2009 Black Saturday fires.
Top things to do in Lake Mountain
Cross-Country Skiing
37km of groomed cross-country ski trails through snowgum woodland, ranging from easy flat loops for beginners to longer terrain for experienced skiers. Equipment hire available at the resort. Night skiing on select evenings in peak season.
Snowshoeing Trails
Guided and self-guided snowshoeing routes through the snow-covered alpine meadows — one of the most accessible and magical winter activities for families. Equipment hire at the resort.
Spring Wildflower Meadows
September–November wildflower displays on the plateau — mountain daisies, trigger plants, billy buttons and alpine everlastings carpet the open slopes in extraordinary profusion. Free to walk in the resort off-season.
Marysville Township
A beautiful alpine town 30 minutes below Lake Mountain, still recovering from the 2009 Black Saturday fires. Excellent cafés (Bruno's Art & Sculpture Garden is unmissable), walking tracks through recovering forest, and comfortable accommodation.
Steavenson Falls Walk
A short, easy walk from Marysville to one of Victoria's most spectacular waterfalls — 122 metres high, and even more dramatic after spring rains. The falls are lit at night and are a short detour on the drive between Marysville and Lake Mountain.
Practical tips for your Lake Mountain trip
- Check the snow report at lakemountainresort.com.au before visiting in winter — the resort needs 30cm base to open the trails and this isn't guaranteed every year.
- Arrive by 9am in winter to beat the Melbourne crowd and get equipment hire sorted before the queues build.
- Chains are mandatory on the Lake Mountain Road in winter when conditions require — hire chains at the resort or bring your own.
- The summer wildflower season (October–November) is free to access and far less crowded than winter — one of Victoria's great under-appreciated natural spectacles.
