Best time to visit

Year-round. Winter brings snow to the nearby Lake Mountain snowfields (30 minutes away). Autumn is spectacular for colour in the mountain ash forests. Spring brings spectacular wildflowers. Summer is cool and green — a welcome escape from Melbourne's heat.

Marysville is a resilient and beautiful mountain village in the Yarra Ranges, built into the edge of a magnificent temperate rainforest that produces some of the tallest flowering trees on Earth. The town was devastated by the Black Saturday bushfires in February 2009, which killed 34 of its residents and destroyed most of its buildings — but it has been rebuilt with extraordinary community spirit, and the surrounding forests and waterfalls that made it beloved have fully recovered.

Why Marysville makes a perfect Melbourne weekend getaway

The Steavenson Falls, just a short drive from the town centre, are one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Victoria — a 122-metre cascade through towering mountain ash and tree ferns, lit at night so visitors can experience the falls after dark. The walk to the falls base takes 20 minutes through forest that has regenerated magnificently since the fires, with the mountain ash already growing to impressive heights. The falls are at their most powerful in winter and spring.

The surrounding state forest and the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort (30 minutes from town) offer year-round activities. Lake Mountain is Victoria's premier cross-country skiing and snowshoeing destination in winter, with a network of groomed trails through alpine ash forest at 1,400 metres. In summer and autumn, the same trails become excellent walking and cycling routes with outstanding views across the ranges. The Marysville to Buxton rail trail follows the old logging railway through beautiful forest for 20 kilometres.

Bruno's Art and Sculpture Garden, tucked into the forest on the edge of town, is one of regional Victoria's most extraordinary hidden gems — a fantastical garden of hand-built sculptures, mosaics and art installations created over decades by Italian-Australian artist Bruno Torfs. The garden survived the 2009 fires and has continued to grow in the years since. A visit is a genuinely moving and surprising experience that is unlike anything else in regional Victoria.

Top things to do in Marysville

Steavenson Falls

One of Victoria's most spectacular waterfalls — a 122-metre cascade through mountain ash and tree fern forest, dramatically lit after dark. A short 20-minute walk from the car park to the viewing platform. At their most powerful in winter and spring.

Bruno's Art and Sculpture Garden

A unique and deeply personal sculpture garden created by Italian-Australian artist Bruno Torfs over three decades. Fantastical figures and installations wind through the forest on the edge of town — unmissable, and nothing else like it in regional Victoria. Entry fee applies.

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort

Victoria's premier cross-country skiing destination in winter (30 min from Marysville), with groomed trails through alpine ash forest at 1,400 metres. In summer, the same trails offer excellent walking and mountain biking with alpine views.

Cumberland Scenic Drive

A 36km loop through the spectacular mountain ash forests surrounding Marysville — past giant trees, fern gullies, the Crystal Mountain and Keppel Falls lookouts. One of the finest forest drives in Victoria; best driven anti-clockwise.

Marysville to Buxton Rail Trail

A 20km cycling and walking trail following the old timber railway line through beautiful mountain ash forest and farmland. Mostly flat and suitable for families. The section through the regenerated forest is particularly beautiful.

Lady Talbot Forest Drive (Taggerty)

A spectacular forest drive accessing some of the tallest mountain ash in the Yarra Ranges, with lookouts over the forest canopy and several short walks to significant trees and fern gullies. A 15-minute drive from Marysville.

Practical tips for your Marysville trip

  • Steavenson Falls is lit at night until 11pm — a night visit to see the falls illuminated against the dark forest is one of the most memorable experiences in regional Victoria.
  • Lake Mountain snow is not guaranteed — check road and snow conditions at lakemountainresort.com.au before driving up in winter. Chains or 4WD may be required.
  • Bruno's Art and Sculpture Garden is cash-only — bring notes. The experience takes 60–90 minutes and is not suitable for prams due to uneven terrain.
  • Marysville's accommodation largely rebuilt after 2009 — there are now excellent options from cottages to hotels. Booking ahead is strongly advised for winter snow season weekends.
  • The Cumberland Scenic Drive is narrow in places — not suitable for caravans. Allow at least 2 hours for the full loop including stops.
