Best time to visit

Winter (June–September) for skiing and snowboarding. Summer (December–March) for mountain biking, hiking, and alpine wildflowers. Autumn is beautiful and quiet. Spring can be unpredictable but the wildflowers are spectacular.

Mount Buller is Victoria's most popular and accessible alpine resort, rising to 1,804 metres above sea level in the Victorian Alps. In winter, it transforms into a busy ski resort with 300 hectares of skiable terrain. In summer, it becomes a mountain biking and hiking mecca with sweeping alpine views and wildflower meadows.

Why Mount Buller makes a perfect Melbourne weekend getaway

The Mount Buller ski resort offers 300 hectares of terrain serviced by 22 lifts, catering to beginner through to advanced skiers and snowboarders. The resort village at the summit is a genuine year-round community with hotels, restaurants, bars, and ski schools. Unlike many ski resorts, the village is walk-able and lively, with a genuine après-ski culture centred around the several hotels and restaurants around the central plaza.

The nearby town of Mansfield, 50 kilometres from the summit, is the gateway town for Mount Buller and an excellent base. Mansfield is a charming country town with good cafés, pubs, and accommodation, and is famous as the location of the Man from Snowy River country (the high country rides through here). The High Country Rail Trail and several other cycling routes pass through Mansfield.

In summer, Mount Buller Mountain Bike Park opens with over 50km of trails ranging from green to black diamond. The alpine wildflowers — snow daisies, trigger plants, and heath — carpet the slopes from December to February. The Buller to Stirling Ridge walk offers some of the finest high-country hiking in Victoria with 360-degree views across the Alps.
