Best time to visit

Year-round. Summer for surf and beach swimming. The Penguin Parade runs every night of the year regardless of season — winter evenings are atmospheric and less crowded. The MotoGP Australian Grand Prix takes place annually in October.

Phillip Island is Victoria's most-visited tourist destination — a compact island connected to the mainland by a bridge, famed for its nightly Penguin Parade, world-class surf breaks, a koala conservation centre, and one of the country's most scenic wildlife experiences.

Why Phillip Island makes a perfect Melbourne weekend getaway

The Phillip Island Penguin Parade is one of Australia's most extraordinary wildlife experiences. Every night at dusk, hundreds — and sometimes thousands — of little penguins (the world's smallest penguin species) emerge from the surf and waddle up Summerland Beach to their burrows in the sand dunes. The parade has operated as a managed tourism experience since 1928 and is the number-one paid wildlife attraction in Victoria.

Beyond the penguins, Phillip Island is a world-class surfing destination. The island's southerly exposure to Bass Strait means consistent swells and quality surf breaks. Woolamai Beach is the most famous, with powerful beach breaks and a rugged natural setting. The Phillip Island Surf School at Smiths Beach offers lessons for beginners. The Cape Woolamai walking track (8km return) along the dramatic southern coastline is one of the best coastal walks in Victoria.

The Phillip Island Nature Parks operates four major wildlife experiences: the Penguin Parade, the Koala Conservation Centre, Churchill Island Heritage Farm, and the Antarctic Journey at the Nobbies. The Koala Conservation Centre near Cowes is one of the best places in Victoria to see koalas in the wild, with elevated boardwalks running through koala habitat. Churchill Island is a historic working farm where you can watch sheep shearing, whip cracking, and cheese making.

Top things to do in Phillip Island

Penguin Parade

Every night at dusk, little penguins emerge from the sea at Summerland Beach and march to their burrows. The Underground Viewing is the most intimate experience. Book online in advance — popular sessions sell out.

Koala Conservation Centre

Elevated boardwalks through natural eucalypt habitat where koalas can be observed at close range in the wild. One of the most reliably good koala encounters in Victoria.

Cape Woolamai

The island's highest point, with a spectacular 8km coastal walking track passing dramatic pink granite cliffs, the Pinnacles rock stacks, and long views over Bass Strait. Excellent surf at Woolamai Beach below.

The Nobbies

A spectacular headland at the island's western tip, with dramatic rock stacks and the large Australian fur seal colony at Seal Rocks (visible by telescope from the boardwalk). The sunset views from here are exceptional.

Smiths Beach

One of the island's most beautiful beaches, with good surf, calm sections for swimming, and a lovely café precinct. The Smiths Beach Resort is the island's best accommodation option.

Churchill Island Heritage Farm

Victoria's first European farm, established in 1801. Daily demonstrations of sheep shearing, whip cracking, and milking make this a highlight for families with young children.

Practical tips for your Phillip Island trip

  • Book the Penguin Parade online in advance — popular sessions (Underground Viewing, Penguins Plus) sell out weeks ahead.
  • The Phillip Island Nature Parks offers a combination ticket covering all four attractions at a significant discount.
  • Dress warmly for the evening Penguin Parade regardless of the season — the beach can be cold and windy at dusk even in summer.
  • Cowes is the island's main town and the best base for accommodation — it has good restaurants, cafés, and a pleasant foreshore promenade.
