Tarra-Bulga National Park

Temperate rainforest, suspension bridge and ancient tree ferns

🚗 ~3 hours from Melbourne CBD via the South Gippsland Highway📍 South Gippsland, Victoria
Best for

Families · Photographers · Wildlife lovers · Rainforest walkers

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn for mild walking conditions and excellent birdwatching. Winter for lush green rainforest and misty atmospherics. Summer is pleasant but can be warm on the open ridge sections.

Tarra-Bulga is South Gippsland's greatest natural secret — a cool temperate rainforest in the Strzelecki Ranges, with towering mountain ash, ancient tree ferns, and a dramatic suspension bridge over a fern-filled gully, just three hours from Melbourne. It is one of the few remaining patches of the extensive rainforest that once covered all of South Gippsland, and it's remarkably under-visited given its quality.

Why Tarra-Bulga National Park makes a perfect Melbourne weekend getaway

The park protects a remnant of the cool temperate rainforest that once covered the Strzelecki Ranges before European settlement — a landscape of myrtle beech, blackwood, and tree ferns up to 15 metres tall, threaded with walking tracks and a seasonal stream system. The Rainforest Walk (1.8km) is the park's centrepiece, passing through the densest rainforest and crossing the suspension bridge over Tarra Creek gorge.

The suspension bridge is the park's most photographed feature — a slender walkway suspended above a gully filled with enormous tree ferns, with the sound of the creek below and bird calls from the canopy above. It feels genuinely magical on a misty morning, which are common in the Strzelecki Ranges due to the proximity to Bass Strait weather systems.

The park's birdlife is exceptional — superb lyrebirds, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, crimson rosellas and gang-gang cockatoos are all regularly seen. The Bulga Creek walking track (4.4km) follows the creek through the lower rainforest and is excellent for lyrebird sightings. There is basic camping at the park entrance for those wishing to wake in the forest.

Top things to do in Tarra-Bulga National Park

Suspension Bridge

The park's most memorable feature — a slender suspension bridge over the Tarra Creek gorge, surrounded by enormous tree ferns and rainforest canopy. Most dramatic on misty mornings. Located on the Rainforest Walk circuit.

Rainforest Walk (1.8km)

The park's best circuit walk through the densest myrtle beech and tree fern rainforest, crossing the suspension bridge and following the creek through the gorge. Suitable for all fitness levels and families with older children.

Lyrebird Sightings

Tarra-Bulga is one of the best parks in South Gippsland for lyrebird sightings — the Bulga Creek track in particular is excellent in the early morning. Listen for the extraordinary mimicry calls.

Bulga Creek Walk (4.4km)

A longer walk through the lower forest along Bulga Creek, passing through excellent lyrebird habitat and several beautiful rainforest pockets. Combines well with the Rainforest Walk for a half-day in the park.

Strzelecki Ridge Views

The open ridge sections above the rainforest provide views across South Gippsland to Bass Strait — a striking contrast to the enclosed, mossy world of the forest below.

Practical tips for your Tarra-Bulga National Park trip

  • The park is very popular on public holidays and long weekends — visit on a weekday or arrive early on weekends for the best experience.
  • Combine Tarra-Bulga with a stop at Fish Creek or Korumburra for excellent café options on the South Gippsland Highway.
  • The Strzelecki Ranges are frequently in cloud — embrace it. The rainforest is most atmospheric in light drizzle and mist.
  • Cell service is poor to non-existent in the park — download a map before you arrive and let someone know your plans.
